Summary
[edit]DescriptionBoreray sheep - on Boreray - geograph.org.uk - 1439988.jpg |
English: Boreray sheep - on Boreray Reputed to be the rarest breed of sheep in Britain, a small flock still remains on the island. The sheep were left on Boreray after the evacuation of Hirta in 1930. The Hirta stock were killed, but sheep were also grazed on Boreray and were simply abandoned. They seem to have thrived, with a stable population living without husbandry for the last 80 years. There was a lamb here too, but it is hidden in the shadow.
On the gentler southern side of the island, the grass is clipped very short, I presume that is where the majority of the sheep reside. |
