English: Border (Russia), 18th century
Description
English: Long narrow border of very fine white cotton ornamented with drawn work, embroidery in white, gold thread, black silks and gold fringe at bottom set onto narrow brocaded ribbon on top. Design consists of a double-headed eagle between peacocks with small birds below. Bodies of birds and wings worked in a great variety of designs in very fine drawn work, geometric patterns, embroidered over in white, outlines in gold thread, bird's eyes in black silk. Seven repeats of this group and in each one drawn work designs are different.
