Brass stud at each corner of surface with bevels. .2) 42.5 x 29.8 x 1.2 cms. Bevel on three side edges. W 2.5 cms. Carved decoration over whole surface bounded by the W 2.5cm border. Shield containg leaf sprays, head at top, scrolls on base, notches etc. Note- bookcover, carved board and base (called a writing board but possibly used as a fern book cover) carved with manaia head, fern patterns, and other carving (previous cataloguer) These fern book covers are distinguished by their Maori-style carving, although they were most likely carved by a pakeha. It is thought that book covers like these would be placed at each end of a bundle of pressed ferns when being presented to someone or being posted overseas as a gift.
