Title
book clasp
Description
English: Sheet gilt copper alloy hinged book clasp, sub-rectangular in plan with ogival sides with three triangular points on either side of a convex curve an a lobed knop at the opposite end to the hinge with a circular perforation, 3 mm in diameter. The upper face has a set of parallel incised curvilinear lines that follow the entire edge of the clasp. These decorative details still retain the gilding that would originally have been all over the surface of the clasp. The tubular hinge is missing what seems to have been an iron pin judging from the corrosion product within the hinge.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar book clasp on page 193, No.1368, which is dated from the 18th century.
