Notes | In February 1884 Gordon returned to the Sudan to evacuate Egyptian forces from Khartoum, threatened by Sudanese rebels led by Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi. On his arrival he found the Treasury almost exhausted and the pay of officials and troops nearly three months in arrears. Baring had arranged for Gordon to draw 100,000 pounds from the Egyptian Treasury, but all of this sum was embezzled. To meet his needs Gordon issued has own notes, all of which bore the date 25 April 1884. There were ten denominations, from 50 Piastres to 50 Egyptian pounds issued in various quantities and about half were personally signed by General Gordon. Khartoum came under siege the next month (March 1884) and on 26th January 1885 the rebels broke into the city, killing Gordon (against al-Mahdi's instructions) and the other defenders. The British relief force arrived two days later. It is said that without the Gordon banknotes Khartoum would have fallen earlier. When the 'rebels' broke in possession of a Gordon note was cruelly punished, but about half of them made their way across the desert in the hope they would be redeemed in Egypt, Most, however, were repudiated. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
