Description

The initial giving of the Bon Echo Park property by Merrill Denison to the Department of Lands and Forest was in 1959. In 1960, 70 campsites were constructed with further park development in 1961 with installation of 200 campsites. By 1962 the number of campsites had grown to 400 with 84,610 visitors in registered. In 1963 98,000 visitors came to Bon Echo. In 1964 the Park increased in size to 15,500 acres due to a purchase of 53 acres from Merrill Denison. The above information is cited from the Bon Echo 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2015 by Lisa Roach, Natural Heritage Education Coordinator.

Bon Echo was officially opened on Wednesday July 21, 1965. The above photo was taken of a Park gatehouse attendant the same year.
