He gives her a sleepingdraught, assuring her that it will notharm her mother, but merely cause herto sleep soundly. The scene then sud-denly changes to the mountains ofthe Brocken. SCENE II The Summit of the Brocken This scene shows a wild spot in theBrocken mountains by moonlight. Thewind is whistling in weird gusts. Mefi-stofele is helping Faust to climb thejagged rocks, from which flames nowand then dart forth. Will-o-the-wispsflutter to and fro, and Faust welcomesthem, grateful for the light they give. Arriving at the summit, Mefistofelesummons the infernal host — demons,witches, wizards, goblins, imps — andpresides over the Satanic orgies as King.All pay him homage and dance in wild-est joy as he breaks into fragments aglass globe, typifying the earth, crying: ACT II The Garden of Margaret
