[edit]DescriptionBog wintergreen, Pyrola asarifolia subsp. asarifolia (28574146228).jpg |
bog wintergreen, Pyrola asarifolia subsp. asarifolia, Nevada, White Mountains, Middle Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 2643 m (8670 ft). Although a rare find in the White Mountains, bog wintergreen is otherwise widespread across the cooler parts of North America and east Asia. In the White Mountains it has been found only on a short stretch along this one creek, in deep shade and litter of water birch (Betula occidentalis). This, and a small occurrence of Labrador tea (Rhododendron columbianum) in another very wet and sheltered location on the other side of the range, are the only members of the Heath Family ever found in this arid mountain range. As always with me, lighting for this image was all-natural - a fortuitous sunlit stem against the general deeply shaded background. |
