English: Boer War Memorial - Plymouth Hoe In these days of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq we tend to forget that since mankind has been able to traverse the globe war has been waged on foreign fields.
In the three years of the Boer War almost half a million British soldiers served in this conflict. According to Rudyard Kipling, the Boer War taught the British "no end of a lesson". Over 20,000 British Troops lost their lives and were laid to rest in the heat and dust of the South African veldt, with a further 22,829 being wounded. Of the dead, over 13,000 died of disease. Almost 22,000 members of the South African Field Force also lost their lives in a conflict lasting just those few short years. A lesson still not learned then! |
