Description

Le Bodhisattva Lokesvara irradiant

Lokesvara est le nom au Cambodge du Bodhisattava Avalokiteshvara.

Avalokitesvara (le seigneur qui regarde d'en haut) est l'un des grands Bodhissatva du Mahayana (Le Bouddhisme du Grand Véhicule). On le reconnait à l'image du Buddha Amitabha dans sa coiffure. Sa compassion s'étend à tous les êtres.

A l'époque de Jayavarman VII (1179-1220?) apparaissent les Avalokitesvara dits "irradiants". Il s'agit d'une forme spécifiquement khmère fondée sur des textes indiens selon lesquels chaque pore d'Avalokiteshvara contient un univers au centre duquel se trouve un Buddha.
