| Description | Photo of Bob Hope rehearsing for this first starring television role in the television special Star Spangled Revue. Hope was once quoted as saying he couldn't be paid enough to work on television. Despite that comment, his agent was contacted by a representative of the en:Frigidaire Company asking just how much money it would take to get Hope to perform on television. Hope responded with a figure of $50,000, confident that the company wouldn't be willing to pay that much. Frigidaire responded with an offer to Hope for 5 television specials-the first paid at $40,000, with the other 4 being paid at $37,500 per special. These specials were known as the Star Spangled Revue; the work on them turned Hope into an enthusiastic television performer. He made many television specials for NBC-TV through 1996. This is for the first of those specials; it aired on Easter Sunday evening in 1950. Look magazine carried a story on Hope's television debut. |
