| Description |
bluedicks, Dichelostemma capitatum subsp. capitatum, California, Sierra Nevada, Rock Creek, Holiday Campground, Owens Valley drainage, elevation 2175 m (7135 ft). This native perennial bulb is common across the southwestern United States in a variety of habitats from deserts to the Pacific coast below about 2300 meters (7600 feet) elevation. The eastern edge of its range is roughly along a line from southern Oregon to southwestern New Mexico, and the subspecies seen here goes no farther east than the Mojave Desert. In more arid habitats the bulbs often stay dormant for many years, emerging in particularly wet years, and/or in recent burns as with this location. Recently it has been proposed that this species belongs in its own separate genus, as Dipterostemon capitatus. The vernacular name bluedicks is though to be based on a shortening of the genus name Dichelostemma. |
