Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The black redstart, belonging to the genus Phoenicurus, is a small passerine bird that was historically categorized within the thrush family but is now recognized as an Old World flycatcher. Formerly referred to by obsolete names such as Tithys redstart, blackstart, and black redtail, this species exhibits a distinctive orange tail, particularly noticeable when flashed open or during flight.

The appearance of the black redstart shows significant variation across its range. Western individuals tend to be darker overall, with the male displaying a slaty blackish coloration, while the female appears smoky grayish. In contrast, eastern males feature extensive orange underparts, and females exhibit a warm brown hue. The species' vocalizations also vary, with western birds producing a short trill preceded by buzzy intro notes, while eastern counterparts incorporate both buzzy and trilled elements. Calls include high-pitched "tseet" sounds and dry clicks.

Occupying diverse open habitats, the black redstart is commonly found, although not exclusively, in areas with a rocky component. Its feeding behavior is primarily ground-based, and the bird often perches in an upright position. Additionally, it sings from prominent perches, contributing to its communication within its habitat. The black redstart's distinctive features and behaviors make it a noteworthy presence in a range of ecosystems.
