When desirous of securing a picture ofthe egg alone I have tried again and againto gently shove her off, but in the end havefailed and had to leave her, exceedinglyangry and broody, her feathers fluffed out,her tail spread to the very fullest extent,but victorious, and still in possession ofher treasure. The egg, nevertheless, need not be socarefully cherished, at all events as far aswarmth is concerned, for on the 5th ofDecember I know that Pidgy—to mygreat concern—was uncovered for over fourhours, yet on the 6th he was hatched a finestrong chick. This first attempt was a failure, foralthough I waited for over twelve hours,the old birds never visited the nest. I was there by 6.30, and a few minuteslater had finished unwrapping the realcamera—placed there overnight—and wasready. During these operations the nestlingnever moved, but for a couple of hours layquite still with his back to me. Later onhe changed his position from time to time,once or twice during my vigil stood up inhis nest for exercise, and at intervals duringthe long day, did a good deal of yawning,preened his feathers, nibbled the leaves andsticks within reach, relieved himself overthe edge of the nest, rolled his crop roimdand round as pigeons do, and also wentthrough series of throat and neck e
