Text Appearing Before Image:
d by the pecu-liar manner in which their hind wingsare tailed. Their color is a dull brownof various shades, marked in some ofthe varieties with specks of white orblue. Their presence in the gardens andmeadows, says a recent writer, andin the fields and along the river-banks,adds another element of gladness whichwe are quick to recognize, and eventhe plodding wayfarer who has not thehonor of a single intimate acquaint-ance among them might, perhaps, bethe first to miss their circlings abouthis path. As roses belong to June, and chrysanthemums to November, soButterflies seem to be a joyous part ofJuly. It is their gala-day, and theyare everywhere, darting and cir-cling and sailing, dropping to investi-gate flowers and overripe fruit, andrising on buoyant wings high into theupper air, bright, joyous, airy, ephe-meral. But July can only claim thelarger part of their allegiance, for theyare wanderers into all the othermonths, and even occasionally bravethe winter with torn and faded win^s.

Idrather they would call me thatthan stupid, however. Do Ilook stupid in my picture? Look pleasant, said the manwhen taking my photograph forBirds, and I flatter myself I did—and intelligent, too. Look atmy brainy head, my delicateears—broad below to catch everysound, and tapering so sharplyto a point that they can shapethemselves to every wave ofsound. Note the crafty calcula-tion and foresight of my low, flat brow, the resolute purposeof my pointed nose; my eye deepset—like a robbers—my thincynical lips, and mouth openfrom ear to ear. You couldntfind a better looking Fox if yousearched the world over. I can leap, crawl, run, andswim, and walk so noiselesslyth
