THE CACTUS. PROF. W. K. HIGLEY. BECAUSE the Greeks in oldentimes applied the word Cactusto a prickly plant, Linnaeus,often called the Father of Bot-any, gave the same name to our won-derful American growth and since histime these strange and varied plants haveborne this nomenclature. We can hardly imagine any group ofplants more interesting. There areover eight hundred varieties of curiousand unexpected forms, bearing tubularor rotate flowers most varied in sizeand color—white, pink, purple, yellow,crimson, deep red—all beautiful andfascinating, and in our Northern coun-try, protected in the conservatories. TheNight-blooming Cereus is most re-nowned, most admired of all. The Cacti are commonly found in theUnited States, in Mexico, and in SouthAmerica, and some species are cultivatedon the borders of the Mediterranean Sea,where the fruit is eaten.
