d nesting onthe St. Clair Flats, Michigan, by Mr.W. H. Collins, who, in describingsome of its breeding habits, says: Ihad the good fortune to find two nestsof this bird containing respectivelyseven and eight eggs. The first wasplaced on some drifted rushes on asunken log, and was composed of flagsand rushes evidently taken from thepile of drift upon the log, as they wereshort pieces, so short, in fact, that thenest when lifted with the hands fellin pieces. The nest was four inchesdeep and lined with down from thefemale. This nest contained sevenfresh eggs of a creamy color, varied inmeasurements and of a uniform ovalshape, very little smaller at one end.The other nest was built similar to aCoots nest; that is, of flags and grassinterwoven at the base of a bunch offlags growing in water three or fourfeet deep. It was built in such a waythat the nest would rise and fall withthe water. The food of the Red-head consistsof mollusks, shell-fish, and the seedsand roots of aquatic plants. 118

Theregion included is bounded on thethe north by the British possessions,on the east by the Atlantic ocean, onthe west by the Rocky mountains, andon the south by the Indian Territory,Arkansas, Tennessee, and NorthCarolina. While living in the countryI have always had birds at my homeand in the neighborhood, and
