Text Appearing Before Image:
GoldenPheasants are called in China Kinki orKinkee, which means Gold Flower fowlor Wroght fowl. They are greatlyprized by the Chinese, not alone for thebeauty of their plumage and their elegantcarriage, but also for the excellence oftheir flesh. They are said tO be moredelicate for the table than are the otherpheasants, but their numbers are muchtoo limited to be often seen in a cookedstate. The feathers of the crest and ruffare much sought for by anglers for thepurpose of decorating their artificialbaits. These feathers are particularlyused in decorating the gaudy hooks ofIrish fishermen. The female does not possess the mag-nificent colors of her mate. Her plumageis plain and of a reddish brown color, which is marked by spots and bars of adarker hue. Her tail, too, is muchshorter than that of her mate. But littlehas been written regarding the habits ofthe Golden Pheasants in their nativehaunts. Our knowledge of them hasbeen chiefly obtained from the study ofthe birds in phcasantries.

GOLDEN PHEASANT. (Thaumalea picta). Life-size. Tail somewhat shortened. 4»PYRIGHT 1900, BY A. W. MUMFORDj CHICAGO JULIES KINDERGARTEN. Little Julie and her brother Ned lefthome in the middle of winter to go Southwith their Mama. It was snowing andvery cold when they kissed their Papagoodbye at the train. But when theyreached their Uncle Roberts home, inFlorida, they could not think it waswinter any longer: the flowers bloomedeverywhere out of doors, bright birdssang and flitted among the roses, andbig butterflies, golden like the jessamine, floated from blossom to blossom. Ned was quite as tired as his little sis-ter, after their two days of travel; so,when the two had been kissed and wel-comed by their Uncle and Aunt, theywere quite ready for their warm bathsand pleasant beds. Next morning, Julie woke up and wasdressed while Ned was still dreaming. He was awakened by hearing her clapher hands and cry delightedly: O, Ned-die, do get up quick and come here! There are just no end of Chris
