It does notfurnish transparent gems, but occurringmassive in large pieces affords materialfor table-tops, vases, jewel-boxes, paper-weights, and other large objects in whichsuch a color is desired. The stone hasa slight translucency, which heightens itseffect when polished, and it is also likejade in being quite tough. The Russiansuse it more extensively perhaps than anyother people, often introducing it into or-namental and decorative works, and it isa stone especially prized by the imperialfamily. Its hardness is 5.5-6.5; its spe-cific gravity 3.4-3.7. Before the blow-pipe it fuses easily and becomes black.It crystallizes in the triclinic system. It
