Text Appearing Before Image:
eason of thelarks, and earth and sky are more lovelyfor the magic of their singing. Onehardly knows how to describe it in words.Spring o the year! Spring o the year Iit seems to say to the listener, both inthe east and west, but the song of thewestern meadow lark has a richer mel-ody, a more piercing delight. It seemsto talk of forgotten things; of youth andfirst hopes; first love; it has all the glam-our of the far-away, and yet a sweetnessof the near. It rises from the thick grassat your feet, yet it mounts towards theblue sky! It is a veritable Flute of Ar-cady blown with a breath of joy. Ella F. Mosby. The dogwood blossoms white as snowTheir favors now to rambler show,And where the Winters latest driftThrough the dark moss did silent sift,All blossomed-starred, above the groundThe shy arbutus now is found. The cloud-capped mountains all appearWith verdant slopes and summits clear; The sun has lost its soulless glare-Earth, sea and sky are wondrous fair. —George Bancroft Griffith.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE RED-BACKED SANDPIPER. (Tringa alpina pacifica.) The sandpipers trip on the glassy beach, Ready to mount and fly;Whenever a ripple reaches their feet They rise with a timorous cry. —Duncan Campbell Scott, Sandpipers. Xtxy early in the spring the Red-backed Sandpiper leaves its winter homein the States and countries bordering theGulf of Mexico and starts on its longjourney to the cooler region of the farnorth. It arrives in Alaska early in May,in full breeding plumage, and the malesare soon engaged in prettily wooing thecoy females. Mr. Nelson, who had un-excelled opportunities for studying thehabits of these interesting sandpipers, well describes their courting habits. Hesays: The males may be seen uponquivering wings flying after the femaleand uttering a musical, trilling note, which falls upon the ear like the mellowtinkle of large water-drops falling rap-idly into a partly filled vessel. Imaginethe sounds thus produced by the waterrun together into a steady and rapid trillsome f
