eproperties enable it to endure after theother ingredients of the rocks of whichit formed a part have been worn away.It is quite heavy as compared with thequartz of which the sand is mostly com-posed, and hence continually accumulateson a beach, while the quartz is in partblown away. In such localities it will al-ways b^ found near the water line, be-cause the waves, on account of its weight,can carry it but a slight distance inland.Practically all garnet is three and one-half times as heavy as water, and somefour times as heavy. Garnet, as a rule,is somewhat harder than quartz, its hard-ness being 7 1-2 in the scale of whichquartz is 7. Some varieties are, however,somewhat softer. The hardness of gar-net and its uneven fracture are propertieswhich give it an extensive use for rub-1)ing and polishing wood. For this pur-pose it is spread upon glued paper in themanner of sandpaper and is used simi-larly, but it is superior to the latter. Mostvarieties of garnet fuse quite readily be- no
