ugh the efforts of theSociety for the Protection of Birds and theSouth Australian Ornithological Associa-tion. The former, a branch of the EnglishSociety for the Protection of Birds, wasfounded in 1894, and in 1901 had a mem-bership of 1,033. Its headquarters are atAdelaide, and its secretary is Mrs. JohnPlayford, The Willows, Mitchan, Ade-laide, South Australia. It has issued sevenannual reports showing the progress of itswork. The South Australian OrnithologicalAssociation, while primarily devoted toadvancing the interests of ornithology ingeneral, also devotes attention to bird-pro-tection, and at the second annual meetingof the Australian Ornithologists Union, inNovember, 1902, took an active part in theeffort to secure the enactment of moreuniform bird laws throughout southernAustralia. Nowhere in the southern hemi-sphere has more active interest been dis-played, and nowhere have more practical re-sults in bird-protection been accomplished,than in South Australia.—T. S. Palmer.

Many of them are mere sandbars, more or less grown with coarse grasses, and, on their westernsides, fringed by marshes which reach out into the bays separating themfrom the mainland. Useless for agricultural purposes, these islands have a high commercialvalue only when they have become the sites of summer resorts; butwhen they have not suffered from an irruption of hotels and cottagesthey are, as a rule, tenanted only by an occasional fisherman or thecrews of Hfe-saving stations, whose presence does not materially altertheir primeval conditions.
