The history of bird houses as an architectural component dates back to the 13th century. They were usually located on the facades of mosques, madrasas, libraries, piers and bridges, tombs, inns, hamams and houses. They were built as additional elements on the surface of facades, carved as niches from stone or wood. Their number increased during the 15th century and they were popular until the end of 19th century. Due to the endurance of certain materials, those bird houses still existing today can generally be found on the entrance faces of stone buildings.
