Title |
Bicycling The Ladies of the Wheel, 1896 Series: Paris Capital of the 19th Century |

Description |
The woman holding the bicycle is wearing a short dress over dark leggings. Her dress retains the style of the epoque, with a sharply accentuated, corseted waist, a very high collar and billowing, leg of mutton sleeves. The woman on the left wears an English tailored suit. Her skirt is narrow through the hips and widens through the hem. Her blouse has fairly wide sleeves and a very high collar. Both women's hats are perched on top of their heads, most likely held down by hat pins. Abstract sources: Boucher, François. 20,000 Years of Fashion. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1967.
