Summary

[edit]
Description Built in 1967, this modern City Hall, part of the Bethlehem City Center complex, was designed by the architecture firm of Lovelace & Spillman. The building is a taller version of the Public Safety Building next door, with the three-story rectangular block of that building raised on a two-story base. The building features a rectangular footprint with pilotis at the base dividing up a large glass curtain wall, a second-story balcony that cantilevers over the first floor and features a simple low-profile modern railing, an entryway with a reverse shed canopy, three upper floors clad in textured concrete panels with punched window openings framed by textured concrete trim with angled spandrels under each window, and a roof that cantilevers over the exterior walls of the building below, with an angled profile that makes it thinner at the edges than in the middle, with a central tapered penthouse that conceals the building’s mechanical equipment. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Central Bethlehem Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, though it has since stood long enough to be eligible for listing individually or as part of a district.
