Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Berry Pomeroy Castle, 11 March 2017. Built late 15th Century by the de la Pomeroy family (who came over with the Norman Invasion and had become Lords of the Manor) until 1547 when Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector to Edward VI (the sone of Henry VIII and his sister, Jane Seymour). His descendents removed much of the original castle and added residential buildings in 1560-80 and 1600. In the English Civil War the castle was raided by Roundheads. In the late 17th Century the castle was abandoned and much of the stone was taken by the then Duke to rebuild a house in Wilstshire. However, the castle remained in the ownership of the Seymours and is the property of the current Duke of Somerset. The gatehouse, curtain wall and St. Margaret's Tower (on right) are part of the original castle. The house behind dates from 1560-80.
