Summary
[edit]DescriptionBennett-Neelon House, Buffalo, New York - 20201230.jpg |
English: The Bennett-Neelon House, 18 Capen Boulevard, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. Like the Waldrow House around the corner on Main Street, this is another of the Mediterranean Revival residences to be found in University Heights, the only neighborhood of Buffalo where the style is relatively common. By comparison with the former, the Bennett-Neelon House presents a more subdued iteration of the style: while the requisite red tile roof and warm-hued façade are both present, the ironwork on the balconet above the entrance is quite a bit less ornate, and the Classical flourishes are essentially limited to the blind arches that crown the bottom-floor windows. The red brick Gibbs surround that frames the front entrance is an interesting touch indeed: an influence from the contemporaneously popular but aesthetically very different Tudor Revival style that nonetheless harmonizes quite well with the rest of the design. The house was built in 1928 for local bankruptcy attorney Matthew W. Bennett (1879-1940), but he only lived there until 1931; the house spent the next half-dozen years passing through the hands of a succession of short-term owners. A much longer-tenured early resident was self-employed plastic products salesman William J. Neelon (1902-1955), a contracted representative for several manufacturers in the region who lived in the house from 1937 until his death. |
