Description

GENT - Gand. Torre Belfort

La majestuosa Torre Campanar és el símbol de l'autonomia de la ciutat. A la torre es conserven encara els drets municipals, adquirits en 1180. Adossada a la Torre Municipal, està situada la Llotja del Drap. En un eufòric gòtic brabanzón, aquest monument ret homenatge a la indústria tèxtil, a la qual tant havia de la ciutat. L'antic habitatge del carceller, està adossada a la cantonada de la Llotja del Drap.

La façana davantera està coronada pel 'Mammelokker', terme derivat del dialecte gants, que narra la llegenda de Cimón, que condemnat a morir de fam i de set, va ser alletat per la seva filla i així es va salvar. El Campanar Municipal és la torre central del famós conjunt que forma amb la Catedral de Sant Bavó i l'Església de Sant Nicolau.
