Title
Belt-plate
Description
English: Roman copper alloy enamelled belt-plate of 2nd to early 3rd century date The belt fitting is fragmentary and is represented by the end of the plate only (with a surviving length of 23.2mm and a weight of 3.7g). The fitting has a projecting circular stud or 'frog' (10.1mm diameter, 2.1mm thick and with a height of 6.7mm above the plate). The outside of the frog was notched but is now eroded. The interior of the frog is enamelled with green enamel containing white squares and swirls, seemingly millefiori. The rod connecting the plate to the stud is of oval section. The buckle-plate was rectangular and has broken in both directions (with a surviving width of 18.5mm and a thickness of 1.9mm). The edge of the plate was enhanced with notches. The interior of the plate was decorated with three rows containing enamel. The surviving enamel is again millefiori of green with white swirls, although a little red enamel is evident at the edge and may have led to another coloured square. At the rear of the plate is an oval stud (7.5 x 8.3mm, with a height of 6.2mm above the plate). The rear stud is undecorated. Both stud faces are angled relative to the plate. The belt fitting has an overall depth of 13.3mm. The surface of the fitting is well-preserved with pale to dark brown patina.
