Description
English: Lock and Dam #12. Part of the Bellevue Dam Historic District. 401 N. Riverview St., Bellevue, Jackson County, Iowa. Built in the 1930’s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, officially known as, “Federal Public Works Project No. 17). Its construction provided jobs while improving navigation to spur inland water transport. Begun in 1934 and opened in 1938, and completed in 1939. Employed up to 960 men at one time. Still in full operation. In the background can be seen part of what was once the 10,710 acre Savanna National Forest (not part of the historic district). The national forest was established on June 5, 1925, renamed the Bellevue-Savanna National Forest on June 15, 1926 and abolished on July 15, 1954.
