E.s Newest Plant H Four days after hiring the first produc-tion employee, Western Electrics new-est plant was turning out its first telephones. The sets were only slightly newer thanthe plants fixtures. Workmen were stillcompleting the transition from warehouse tomanufacturing facility when the first 17women started their initial day of work atthe new pilot plant in Shreveport, La. Engineers had estimated that they wouldproduce about 100 key-type telephone setsduring their first week at the unfamiliar work.At weeks end the assembly line, set up andsupervised by six men and women on loanfrom Westerns Indianapolis Works, hadturned out 1,494 sets. Plans to locate a plant in Shreveport wereannounced January 25. Leasing of the plantspace was announced March 2. The firsttelephone was assembled on May 3.
