The representative of the tele-phone company and the school au-thorities usually visit the home of theshut-in to obtain the approval of theparents for the use of the service andto discuss its installation and opera-tion. Many of the schools also sur-vey the home at the same time, to make sure that the student will havesuitable working arrangements andthat there will be as little distractionas possible from other members ofthe household, radios, television sets,pets, and the like. These might bedisturbing to the student and, more-over, result in the transmission of ob-jectionable sounds to the classroomthrough the students home station.It is also desirable to suggest that theparents consult their doctor to besure that the youngster is physicallyand mentally able to become a mem-ber of the class.
