In the fall of 1940, a New York-Madrid circuit was set up by utilizingradio telephone plant near Madridwhich had been used for service withSouth America prior to the Spanishcivil war. When Madrid was aboutready, it was discovered that its sta-tion was shy an important but, fortu-nately, not bulky item of apparatussome fifty pounds in weight. Nonewas available in Spain, but one wastaken out of a radio station here.Handled as baggage, it accompaniedan obliging passenger on the PanAmerican Clipper. Leaving on Thursday, on Friday itwas in Lisbon, where it was met bya special truck and rushed towardMadrid to be installed the next day.But Saturday night came with noword, and the Spanish force sat upall night waiting to install it. For,after flying across an ocean and dash-ing through Portugal and Spain, theall-important item was lost for twelve

It continued to functionuntil recently, when it was replaced bynew single-sideband equipment. Meanwhile, overseas service to thePacific and Latin America continuedto grow, unhampered by the war inEurope. Until the fateful 7th ofDecember, the year 1941 looked likea quiet period for overseas. But asthe news of Pearl Harbor spread, thecircuits to and from Honolulu wereswamped with a backlog of thousandsof calls. Upon the declaration ofwar the Berlin circuit was cut im-mediately. However, at the requestof the State Department, the Tokyocircuit was kept up some hours longer,for additional calls with AmbassadorGrew.
