For many years there will be 1943 The Telephone Pioneers of America 137 an increasing number of eligibles be-cause of the force additions preced-ing the last depression. And the factthat the nation is at war does notseem to act as a deterrent to joiningthe Pioneers. During 1942, 7,190new members were added, a largernumber than in any previous yearexcept 1941, when there was anespecial emphasis on increase in mem-bership. whole extent of the country today?It is to you that this great develop-ment is due. When the telephones inventorspoke these modest words, trans-continental telephony was but a hopein the minds of the telephones scien-tists and engineers, and todays sys-tem of 24,000,000 interconnectedtelephones was not even a dream.Radio telephony was an unborn art.
