In World J F „ , * . „ Vt , • • • five of them were called to actr War II, the communications experi-ence and ability of telephone menwas made available to a far largernumber of units through the use ofcommissioned and enlisted cadres ofsuch men who were supplemented byothers drawn from outside sourcesfor the less specialized positions.About 5,000 System employees pro-vided a nucleus for 380 such units or were assigned to individual staffpositions during that war. The outstanding contribution madeby these men—and by those in sim-ilar units organized from other com-munications companies and such otherindustries as the railroads—led tothe establishment of peacetime Re-serve affiliated programs in 1947.By June of 1950, eleven units of thistype were functioning actively in ten eractive duty. The remaining six are still ona Reserve basis, ready to do theirpart if needed.

This was composed ofIllinois Bell TelephoneCompany men underthe command of Lt.Colonel A. J. Mitchell,district plant superin-tendent, State Area.Immediately integratedwith it on active dutywas the 309th SignalMulti-channel RadioTeletype Detachmentof Long Lines em-ployees in New York,led by Captain Ray M.DeShon.
