In this list of examples of prophetic vision, first place will beawarded to Alexander Graham Bells prospectus, written atKensington, England, on March 25, 1878, for the purpose ofpromoting the use of the telephone in that country. This docu-ment was written at a time when the telephone art and busi-ness were as yet undeveloped, when there were no telephonecables and no commercially practical transmitter, and when thefirst telephone exchange had been in operation less than twomonths. The following paragraph from this prospectus willbe familiar to most readers, since it has been reprinted manytimes: It is conceivable that cables of telephone wires could be laid under-ground, or suspended overhead, communicating by branch wires withprivate dwellings, country houses, shops, manufactories, etc., etc., unitingthem through the main cable with a central office where the wires couldbe connected as desired, establishing direct communication between any 120 m
