and painter AttilioSinagra was asked to try to capture theessence of the broad and complex servicefunction that is the Long Lines Departmentof A. T. & T. Specifically, he was asked togive his impressions of the drama inherentin the jobs of the 30,000 people who pro-vide, operate and maintain the equip-ment and the vast communications net-works which bind together the 22 BellSystem Operating Companies and some2,700 independent telephone companies,linking them with telephones in 186 coun-tries and territories beyond our bordersand beyond the seas. In terms of scopeand sheer variety of subject matter, it was,the artist says, the most challenging as-signment of his career. However, his initialtrepidation was soon replaced by bound-less enthusiasm for what he saw andexperienced. The fact that his work, repro-duced on this and the following pages, sographically conveys the spirit of LongLines is a measure of this enthusiasm. It isa measure, too, of his perceptive eye andabundant talent.
