This jnan is using testing equipment to adjust equipmentin a radio relay station At each relay station a certainamount of testing apparatus is avail-able and, as a result, a high percent-age of both preventive and repairwork can be handled onthe spot. Some trou-bles can be cleared bythe replacement of, say,a single tube, but othersmay require the replace-ment of an entire sub-assembly of equipment.Consequently, spareparts and sub-assembliesof apparatus for suchreplacement are kept ateach relay station.These can usually be in-stalled in about fifteenminutes after a main-tenance man has reachedthe relay station. But it is clearthat a radio relay station set up tohandle a single football game, or apolitical speech—hence one which in- cludes apparatus lined up under pres-sure and not equipped with as com-plete testing facilities as are ordinar-ily available at a regular point on thenetwork—offers special maintenanceproblems.
