Linda Schmitz and the city comes to life. In acomfortable brown bungalow setback in a neat yard on MarshallStreet, Linda Schmitz, a graying,pleasant-faced woman, peers throughrimless glasses at a bank of plantsin the living-room window. Notinga bright new blossom, she smiles withsatisfaction and goes on into thekitchen to help with breakfast. Mrs. Schmitz, whose husband diedin 1936, has lived here in this quietresidential neighborhood with hersister and brother-in-law ever sinceher only son, a bombardier-navigatorin the Army Air Force, was killedon Christmas Day 1943. Beforethat, she lived in Madison, and sheoften returns there to visit with herfriends. She knows how welcome a sym-pathetic companion can be at timeswhen illness or other troubles strike, and she makes it a point to visit andconsole friends who are sick or un-happy. With a quiet smile she says,I go wherever theres someonewhose morale needs boosting. At home she has two consuminghobbies. One is caring for the houseplantsâ
