[edit]DescriptionBell, Ship,USS Prinz Eugen (4494006950).jpg |
Accession: 70-189-A Bell, Ship, Uss Prinz Eugen 41" H, 36"D. The German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen participated in two of the most famous naval actions during WWII in the Battle of the Atlantic. She accompanied the battleship Bismarck during the Battle of Denmark Straits and was the third heavy ship in the "Channel Dash" of 1942. Awarded to the United States and commissioned into its navy following WWII, several major items were removed and the ship was used as a target in Operation Crossroads. The ship's bell, seen here, is one of several important objects that were saved. Collection of the Curator Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command. |
