Summary

Description
Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin/MOLA science team
English: Example of a single HRSC elevation image (HRSC orbit number 21.688_0000, acquired 28 February 2021; background shaded relief image from elevation measurements by NASA's Mars Observer Laser Altimeter recorded approximately 25 years ago). Left: Red-green-blue image combination showing what the surface looks like in visible light. Note the light blue coloring of the northern and southern limbs, which is due to the camera looking flatter through the Martian atmosphere, resulting in more atmospheric influence on the images due to the longer light path. These parts of the image have been excluded from the global mosaic. Right: infrared red-green image combination. Such unusual views, which also include the infrared channel, are a way of examining the relationship of surface reflectance in the infrared to that of the other colors. They are also examined to discover artifacts or gaps in the input data. Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin/MOLA science team
