Description
Nederlands: Midden van de 19de eeuw bedenkt Emile Bockstael een inventieve oplossing voor het plaatsgebrek op het kerkhof van Laken. Hij ontwerpt een grafgalerij zodat er meer mensen kunnen begraven worden op een beperkte oppervlakte. Hij stelt voor deze begraafplaats ondergronds te bouwen, dit in tegenstelling met bovengrondse galerij in het zuiden van Europa. Het eerste deel wordt in 1878 in gebruik genomen. Nadien zijn er nog diverse uitbreidingen. In 1935 zijn er ongeveer 300 meter ondergrondse galerijen. Er kunnen 4061 kisten worden geplaatst. Na restauratiewerken werden de galerijen in 2017 opnieuw opengesteld voor het publiek.
