This column, under the command of ColonelMahon, had been sent off to the relief of Mate-king by General Hunter at the beginning ofMay. On Friday, the 4th, Hunter, leavingPagets brigade at Warrenton, on the Vaal, to of low bushy hills at Rooidam. The enem\-made a very poor stand, and they were drivennorthwards from ridge to ridge. Barton haltingtrom time to time to shell them with hisartillery. This successful advance along tlicright bank of the Vaal made the position whichthe Boers had held for so long at FourteenStreams untenable. On Sunday, the 6th, theyevacuated it, some of them retiring northwardstowards Vr\burg, but the main body retreatingin the direction of Klerksdorp. On Monda\-Hunter, with Bartons brigade and the Yeomanry,occupied Fourteen Streams, and Pagets brigade-began crossing from Warrenton on a pontoonbridge laid by the Royal Engineers, who alsoset to work to repair the railway bridge.
