NoW^ the French made head againstKiriakoff, who could not hold out with his com-rades in full retreat ; and as he fell back Canrobertcame on, and, gaining the heights, took fullpossession of the Telegraph Hill. There wasver)^ little more fighting to be done, except witha handful of forgotten riflemen : the Russianswere gone. Following Canrobert, Prince Napo-leon and DAurelle advanced, so that soon twostrong and unbroken French divisions and awhole brigade occupied the ground. Then followed the grievous mistake of notfollowing up the beaten enemy. It was clearthat the English could not do this with effect :the bulk of our men had been engaged, we hadsuffered seveiely, and the survivors were worn out with their exertions.
