Notes | "Wooden truncheon which was issued (along with a whistle) to Edward Honiss who served as a special constable during one of the critical periods in the City's history" (ocm) Edward Honiss, born in England in 1827, "landed in Auckland in 1860, and went in the following year to Coromandel. During the Waikato war he served in the militia in Auckland and suburbs, - ". Note that this service did not apparently qualify him as a recipient of the New Zealand Medal. He did however qualify for a Crown Land Grant (ref Daily Southern Cross, 16 March 1866) He was subsequently based in Thames where he was involved in gold mining, , became an insurance agent, and served on the Kauaeranga Highway Board and later became registrar of the Thames Hospital. (Cyclopedia of New Zealand Vol. 2, p868). He died at Thames Hospital in 1906. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
