English: Two WR - and no SR - expresses at Basingstoke. View westward, towards Southampton etc. and Salisbury etc.; ex-L&SW Waterloo - Southampton/Bournemouth/Salisbury/Exeter etc. main lines. On the right and passing the SR Locomotive Shed, GWR Hawksworth 'Modified Hall' 4-6-0 No. 6960 'Raveningham Hall' (built 3/44, named 6/47, withdrawn 6/64 - but preserved and currently (2011) is undergoing overhaul on the West Somerset Railway) is arriving with the 15.50 Portsmouth - Wolverhampton, which it probably worked all the way. Coincidentally, leaving Basingstoke on the left is ordinary 'Hall' No. 5987 'Brocket Hall' (built 11/39, withdrawn 1/64) on the 08.30 Newcastle-on-Tyne - Bournemouth West, running 'only' about 30 minutes late: this 'Hall' would normally have handed over to a SR locomotive at Oxford, the train having been worked by the NER/ER as far as Banbury, having reached there via York, Sheffield Victoria and Woodford. (GW locomotives regularly worked to Portsmouth, but rarely to Bournemouth). Note the display of the unique electro-pneumatic signals. |
