Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Basalt agglomerate in the Eocene of Oregon, USA.

"Agglomerate" refers to coarse-grained, poorly-sorted deposits of volcanic clasts. The example seen here is a basalt agglomerate along coastal Oregon. The rocks were erupted from a Late Eocene-aged volcano, resulting in a volcanic succession called the Yachats Basalt. The sequence is mostly basalt lava flows, but includes some andesite and trachyandesite. Igneous dikes are also present - most are basalt, plus minor andesite and rhyodacite.

Basaltic flows in the Yachats Basalt are often porphyritic, with labradorite plagioclase feldspar phenocrysts. Glomeroporphyritic varieties are present, with clusters of blade-shaped plagioclase phenocrysts.

The stream in the bottom foreground is Cape Creek.

Stratigraphy: Yachats Basalt, Upper Eocene, ~36-37 Ma

Locality: outcrop at the southern edge of a sandy-gravelly beach at Heceta Head, coastal Oregon, USA (vicinity of 44° 08' 02.18" North latitude, 124° 07' 24.58" West longitude)
