Description

Barber family monument in Section 22 of Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Josiah Barber, Jr. (1825-1884) was the son of one of the founders of Cleveland. A civil engineer, he helped construct the Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati Railroad; the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway; and the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad.

A founding trustee of Riverside Cemetery, Josiah Jr. was also its first President and second Superintendent.

His father, Josiah Barber, Sr. (1771–1842) is also buried here. He was a founder of Cleveland. When the last division of the Western Reserve was made in 1809, he, his father-in-law Samuel Lord, and his brother-in-law Richard Lord received the portion from the western border of the Cuyahoga River to the what is now West 117 Street to the west, Lake Erie to the north and what is now Brookpark Road to the south. The three co-founded Lords and Barber Realty Co., which sold most of this land and developed most of the West Side of Cleveland in the early 1800s.

Josiah Sr. built the first brick house in Cleveland. He and Richard Lord started a distillery near the Flats which became known as "Whiskey Island". Josiah Sr. also operated an open-air market that is now the West Side Market. In 1834, he was one of the incorporators of Cleveland's first manufacturing company, the Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Company. In 1843, this company built the "Emigrant", a 275-ton boat which was the first steam propeller driven boat built in Cleveland. A circuit judge in 1834, he became the first elected mayor of Ohio City.

Barber Avenue is named for him.
