Title
Barbarous radiate of Tetricus I. Reverse view.
Description
English: A complete, Roman, struck or hammered, Barbarous Radiate or imitation billon Antoninianus possibly of Tetricus I (270-273AD). Obverse: Draped, radiate bust right with a beard and distinctive straight sharp nose. Inscription: Not applicable. Reverse: Uncertain crude design - possibly a standing figure of Laetitia. Inscription: Not applicable. Mint name: Britain by provenance. Die axis: uncertain. The coin is in fine, worn condition with a small flan, slightly irregular shape prior to obtaining the attractive dark brown patina possibly due to the water logged ground conditions with just one pale green scratch below the nose on the obverse. This coin is likely to date to 270-273AD. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2011, page 79 no. 749 and Identifying Roman Coins, Richard Reece and Simon James, Seaby 1986 reprint 1994, page 22-23 no. 25 and page 36-37. The coin is 14.35mm long, 10.75mm wide, 1.51mm thick, diameter 14.35mm and weighs 1.0g.
