It was just after we had a buffet breakfast at the hotel, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try 3 different banh dumplings. What a great morning tea :) Bánh ít trần are small stuffed glutinous rice flour balls. I think there was some filling inside, perhaps a slice of fatty pork belly. They had a chewy, gluggy texture as expected of sticky rice. Bánh bột lọc trần are the translucent dumplings made with chewy tapioca starch, not unlike the "pearls" you get in bubble tea. These had a slice of fatty pork belly and a soft-shelled shrimp. Bánh bèo are small steamed savory rice cakes, topped with minced dried shrimp. These soft, silky morsels just melt in your mouth without much resistance, but still light textured and not gluggy. All delicious with nuoc cham fish sauce with vinegar. Each type of banh had a totally different texture, and that's the fun part. |
